Sinus Infection Symptoms, Antibiotics, and Alternative Medicine

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Brian Carter Modern Living, Complex Health Problems In our post-modern industrial polluted stress-filled bad-diet culture, no one’s health is simple. We are plagued by complex long-term illnesses like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, AIDS, even sinus problems… it may seem weird to you that I include sinus infections, but the root causes of sinus trouble can be quite complicated… Especially if they are long-term. Antibiotic Overuse Problems I hate to say it (because antibiotics are so great in some situations, and so popular overall), but antibiotics can complicate things even further - there are conditions that do not respond to them… and there are many situations in which they are not even indicated. Physicians have over-prescribed antibiotics for years… they know it, there have been studies that show it, and as a profession they’ve moved away from that. But people still want to leave the doctor’s office with a prescription, a magic-bullet. Of course, sometimes the issue is which antibiotic is the most appropriate one. They don’t all work for everything. Antibiotic Side Effects - When They’re Wrong If the sinusitis hasn’t responded to antibiotics, then either the wrong ones were prescribed, or you need to try another kind of treatment. Chinese Herbal Medicine can address the full spectrum of complaints and causes; we often treat the conditions which are not responding to conventional treatments like antibiotics. A woman wrote me about how antibiotics weren’t solving her diarrhea problem- this can happen when the disease is cold in nature. Antibiotics are cold and bitter; these qualities help it fight the dampness and heat of bacterial infections. But they are more of the same damage when the disease is cold or deficient in nature. Acupuncture and moxibustion (the warming of acupuncture points) can also be effective; some people respond very quickly… results vary depending upon a number of factors (the acupuncturist’s education, accuracy of diagnosis, frequency of treatment, and patient compliance with diet and lifestyle suggestions). Cold and Deficient If the mucus is clear or white, then it is more likely cold in nature. That fits with a Spleen-system deficiency and dampness. That would fit with the pulse she felt. You would have lowered appetite, feel fatigued, have loose stool, and possibly feel cold easily. Antibiotics wouldn’t help here, and could even make things worse. Sinus Infection Symptoms The classic acute sinusitis symptoms are nasal congestion, green nasal phlegm, facial/dental pain, eye pain, headache, and a cough at night. Some patients also complain of fever, feeling ill, bad breath and a sore throat. Chronic sinusitis is more difficult to diagnose. You can have the same symptoms above in a milder form. Chronic means long-term; it’s not usually thought of as chronic unless it’s been going on for 2 months or more. Sinus Infection Causes Sinus problems can be caused by many things- you have to think about environmental and food allergies (allergic sinusitis), chronic sinus infection, and chronic colds. Without more information, it’s hard to be specific. Sinusitis often develops after colds, and can become a chronic problem. The sinuses are very small… one of our weak points, especially for people with weakened immune systems or in the presence of irritants (once again, pollution, allergens, etc.)… she probably asked about the farms and pesticides while she was thinking about the cause of your chronic sinusitis. Mold, Fungus, and Sick Buildings And we can’t forget about mold! While some people appear to be more sensitive than others, fungus can cause fungal sinusitis. This gets into the whole ’sick-building’ topic… Mold can grow in the walls of houses and offices, and is not always easy to detect. Decongestant Side Effects Decongestants are often prescribed. They work by drying you out. Unfortunately, they don’t just dry the mucus. Long-term use of decongestants can lead to other problems, like the dry or heat types of sinus inflammation. This is why, in Chinese Medicine, we always balance an herb with other herbs- if we are drying the phlegm, we also moisten at the same time. Moisture helps the sinuses drain- you remember that Crocodile-Dundee-put-your-head-under-the-steaming-pot-thing? Likewise, there are chinese herbs whose function it is to moisten and transform phlegm. Serious Causes of Sinusitis, and Serious Solutions For those with chronic sinusitis, tests need to be done to rule out the serious things. Sinusitis can be just a simple end-of-your-cold complication, but it can also show up as part of: nasal tumors, fungal infections, and HIV or other immunodeficiency. What about the sinusitis surgery? It works from 50-93% of the time… so it can be a great help if you’re sick and tired of it, and nothing else has worked. but it’s also a super-painful process! I would see an herbalist first. Medical Equipment Used in Chinese Acupuncture

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Hotaka Sutton Chinese medicine is often shrouded in mystical descriptions. A review of the medical equipment used acupuncture reveals there is little mystery. When a person visits an acupuncturist today and has a treatment, infection from needles that are not sterile is not a concern. This is because the very fine, thin acupuncture needles will be taken from individual packages. These sterile needles have even been classified as medical instruments by the Federal Drug Administration. These precision instruments are usually made from stainless steel. In some rarer cases, they are made from gold or silver. Yet, this was not always the case. Acupuncture is an ancient art. What was the earliest medical equipment in ancient Chinese acupuncture? A discussion of the medical equipment used in ancient Chinese acupuncture would lead to a discussion of the very origins of acupuncture. Most people tend to date the beginnings of acupuncture at various times during the reigns of various Chinese Emperors. They might also date it from the text written by the Yellow Emperor. This book still exists and is used as a reference work to some degree. The truth is that acupuncture did not suddenly originate at any given point in time. It was a system of treatment that most likely developed over a period of millions of years of human history through a slow and almost evolutionary method of trial and error. In these very early times, there was not much to distract human beings from the basic concerns of survival. Healing and the treatment of injuries was one of these survival concerns. Gradually, as almost countless years passed, people discovered what worked and as they did they developed theories as to why. The important thing in the beginning was not why a procedure worked, but the fact that it did work. The theories as to why it worked would come later and be subject to change as the level of philosophical and spiritual knowledge increased. In very old sites around the world, very primitive types of medical equipment have been discovered that appear to have been the very first acupuncture medical equipment. The ancient medical equipment was made of stone at first. Later, medical equipment made from fish bones were used also. The medical equipment most likely used in ancient Chinese acupuncture was often made from bamboo. There was no way to make these early needles with the precision that is used today. The materials and the craftsmanship would just not have been present. It is most likely that the earliest forms of acupuncture consisted more of pressure and even bloodletting due to the limitation of the needles. In the Golden Age of Chinese Acupuncture, needles made from metals appeared. These metals were copper, brass, silver, and sometimes even gold. The use of metals in the making of medical equipment used in Ancient Chinese acupuncture allowed a little more precision and thinness. This would have been the beginning of the needle insertion and twisting techniques that are still practiced today. There is no doubt that the earliest instruments were crude. There was little known about sterilization. Despite these drawbacks, the method of trial and error produced methods that worked. It was the success of the procedures that led our ancestors to attempt to explain them. This in turn led to the theories and philosophies behind the procedures. Why Elope?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Mary Casey When I turned forty years old, I decided it was time to get married. Actually, I had been in a serious relationship for over eighteen years, and my fortieth birthday just felt right. But having a traditional white wedding dress and a million relatives just didnt seem like the thing to do at my stage in life. So, we decided to elope. Elopement is a tradition in my family. My grandfather eloped in the nineteen thirties, taking a trip to Niagra Falls with his brother as his witness. Mine had even less people; me, my fianc and the sheriff, along with his secretary who sweetly gave us a copy of the traditional wedding vows in calligraphy on pretty paper. Is elopement for you? What are the advantages of elopement over a traditional wedding? What will you miss out on if you decide to elope? Consider elopement if the following situations fit your life: 1) You are an older bride, and a large ceremony doesnt appeal to you. Or, this isnt your first marriage. 2) You and your husband dont want a religious ceremony. 3) Your husband and you have different religions, and there isnt one singular type of ceremony you can both agree too. 4) Your parents dont agree with your marriage. You are not in a traditional type of relationship. 5) A more creative kind of ceremony tickles your fancy. I know friends who have gotten married in hot air balloons, high above the mountains. Another friend was married on a river boat on the Mississippi. Dont limit yourself to running to Vegas; there are many, many options when you decide to elope. All you need is a justice of the peace and maybe a witness or two, depending on the laws of your state. In my case, all we needed to do was fill out paper work at the local town hall, then arrange for a justice of the peace. I was able to get the city sheriff to do the deed. We were married in the sheriffs office in the fall, with late blooming roses in vases near the windows, and a steady stream of prisoners walking by. How romantic! Actually, it was touching. The sheriff took his job seriously and we did too. Other options where I live is a ceremony in the chapel of the hospital where I work, or even getting married during a fishing trip! Elopement is NOT for you if: 1) You really want the whole dream wedding complete with flowing veil, white wedding gown and cute flower girls. You want to be the princess of the day. 2) You have been collecting Brides magazine for the last ten years. 3) Your family would be heartbroken if there wasnt a party and ceremony that involved them. 4) A religious ceremony is important to you. It is up to you and your future spouse what kind of wedding will suit you both. Elopement could be an option and a fun one at that! This article has been submitted in affiliation with http://www.Prye.Com/ which is a site for Wedding Invitations. Mary Casey has been happily married for three years now. If she had to do it again, she would elope! Low Carb Intelligence vs. Low Carb Stupidity

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By Tom Venuto Remember that movie with Jim Carey, Dumb and Dumber? And remember the sequel to that movie, Dumb and Dumberer? Well, the low carb mania that is sweeping the globe today has reached a level beyond dumberer Its more like dumberererer (try to say that five times real fast) There is an epidemic of low carb stupidity running rampant among millions of people throughout the world today and fast food restaurants, food product manufacturers, supplement companies, and weight loss programs are capitalizing on it in a big way! The low carb diet is not inherently stupid, however. It can be quite beneficial within certain parameters and under the right circumstances. The problem is that many practitioners are uninformed, misinformed, or simply lack the common sense and intuitive bodily wisdom to utilize the low carb approach intelligently. Many low-carbers dont even know why they are on a low carb diet, theyre just following the followers (Not intelligent!) Doing what everyone else is doing is always one of the surest, straightest routes to arrive at mediocrity! If you want to be a success, your chances are far greater if you look at what the masses are doing and do the exact opposite! Fortunately, there is such a thing as low carb intelligence. Hopefully, by reading my brief rant, you will increase your carb IQ, and soon join the ranks of the extraordinarily fit, lean and healthy carbo geniuses! Low carb stupidity #1 Selecting your beer or liquor carefully to make sure you have the brand with the fewest grams of carbs. Low carb intelligence Avoiding alcohol if youre trying to lose body fat. Drinking only in moderation if youre trying to maintain your weight and be healthy. Low carb stupidity #2 Believing any of the following: Low carbs diets are the only way to lose fat, low carb diets are the best way to lose fat, no one should ever eat a high carb diet, high carbs always make you fat, starches and grains make everyone sick and unhealthy. Low carb intelligence Adjusting your approach according to your health status, your goals and your body type, not according to generalizations preached by dogmatic diet gurus. Low carb stupidity #3 Going on the Atkins diet (or any other very low carb/ketogenic diet) with absolutely no idea why youre doing it or how the diet works (going on it because everybody is doing it and because you see it advertised everywhere.) Low carb intelligence Studying the physiology and biochemistry of the low carb diet and completely understanding all the pros and cons. Then making an informed decision whether to restrict carbs based on your own personal goals, needs and heath status. Low carb stupidity #4 Thinking that very low carb (ketogenic) dieting is a maintainable lifestyle. Low carb intelligence Understanding that reasonable (moderate) restriction of carbs can be a helpful short term strategy for fat loss, a good way to reach a peak, a legitimate method to control appetite, and an effective way for some people to control insulin. But also understanding that a balanced diet of natural foods is probably the most suitable of all the diets for health, lifelong maintenance and weight control. Low carb stupidity #5 Believing calories dont count if you just cut out your carbs (or not counting calories because its too much work.) Low carb intelligence Knowing that fat loss always did and always will boil down to calories in vs. calories out. Taking the time and effort to crunch your numbers (at least once), typing up your menu on a spreadsheet, keeping a diary, and/or using nutrition tracking software. Low carb stupidity #6 Staying on a low carb diet that has stopped working (or never worked in the first place). Low carb intelligence Adjusting your diet according to your results; understanding that a common definition of insanity (and/or stupidity) is to continue to do the same things over and over again, while expecting a different result. Low carb stupidity#7 Believing that you dont need exercise because all you need to do is cut carbs. Low carb intelligence Knowing that dieting is the worst way to lose fat and that exercise is the best way to lose fat (Burn The Fat, dont starve the fat). Low carb stupidity #8 Using the argument; Theres no such thing as an essential carbohydrate as justification for low carb dieting. Low carb intelligence Realizing that textbook definitions of essential can be taken out of context to promote a fad diet and that just because theres technically no essential carbohydrates (as there are essential amino acids and fatty acids) doesnt mean carbohydrates arent essential in other respects. Low carb stupidity #9 Using the argument, You have to eat fat to lose fat as justification for a high fat, low carb diet, without explaining it or putting it in context (exactly how much fat and what kind of fat?) Low carb intelligence Understanding the importance of essential and omega three fats (the good fats), but not taking any single nutritional principle to an extreme (such as, If a little fat is good for you then a lot is even better.) Low carb stupidity #10 Saying, All carbs are bad or All carbs are fattening. Low carb intelligence Avoiding generalizations, and instead, having multiple distinctions about carbohydrates (and other foods) so you can make better choices. For example: Low GI vs. high GI carbsSimple vs. complex carbsStarchy vs. fibrous carbsNatural vs. refined carbsHigh calorie density vs. low calorie density carbs Low carb stupidity #11 Not clarifying your definition of low carbs. Low carb intelligence Realizing that there are very low carb diets, low carb diets, and moderate carb diets and that you cant lump them all together. (Some people consider The Zone Diet, at 40% of calories from carbs, a low carb diet, others consider 40% carbs quite high). Low carb stupidity #12 Believing that carrots are fattening because theyre high on the glycemic index and because a popular fad diet book says so. Low carb intelligence Have we lost all vestiges of common sense? With an average carrot clocking in at 31 calories and 7.3 grams of carbs, do you really think that this orange-colored, nutrient-dense, low-calorie, all-natural, straight-out-of-the-ground root vegetable is going to make you fat? (if so, you are in “carbohydrate kindergarten.”) Low carb stupidity Lucky #13 Eating lots of processed and packaged low carb foods (including those protein candy bars) and thinking youre being good and following your diet. Low carb intelligence Realizing that natural, unrefined foods are one of the keys to lifelong weight control and that anything man made and refined is NOT an ideal diet food including the highly processed low carb foods that are all the rage this year. (Doesnt this bandwagon reek of the late 80s and early 90s no fat craze, when all those fat free foods were being passed off as healthy diet food, but were really highly processed and full of pure sugar?) –End of Stupidities– Forgive me for the obvious dashes of sarcasm, but sometimes I just cant help myself and I end up going into rant mode I think the last time this happened was in my newsletter almost a year ago that was the issue where I wrote about the ad for the candy bar that increases your bench press by 50 pounds? Yeah… I heard those bars are especially effective when you combine them with low carb potato chips (weren’t those low fat potato chips a few years ago??? Oh nevermind… it’s all soooo confusing!) Types of Over the Counter Pain Reliever

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Robert_Thatcher] Robert Thatcher Everyone has used some sort of over the counter pain reliever. Often times people misuse these products because they do not believe they are strong enough or as harmful as prescription medications. While over the counter medications are weaker than prescription pain relief medications, they are still medicine. Over the counter pain relief comes in two forms: non steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen. Knowing the differences between the two and how they work can help you make a better choice on what products to use and how to use them. NSAIDs work by stopping the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are a natural chemical in the body that trigger pain. They also reduce inflammation. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and ketoprofen. Gastrointestinal problems are the most common side effect of NSAIDs. NSAIDs also cause problems with kidney function. The severity and chance of experiencing side effects increase with use. NSAIDs can also interfere with blood pressure medications. People who drink more than 1 alcoholic beverage per week increase their chances of experiencing side effects from NSAIDs. Acetaminophen works to relieve pain and reduce fever. Acetaminophen works by stopping pain in the brain as opposed to how NSAIDs stop pain at the area of pain. So instead of stopping the pain, acetaminophen actually blocks the brain from feeling the pain. Long term use of acetaminophen, especially in large doses can cause kidney damage. Acetaminophen is easier on the gastrointestinal area than NSAIDs, but can effect the liver with long term use. Both NSAIDs and acetaminophen may be used together to treat pain. However, it is important not to use two products from the same group together, such as aspirin and naproxen. This could result in an overdose. It is also important to speak with your doctor before taking an over the counter pain medication if you are taking other medication. Asking For The Date

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Peter Portero If you are going to ask somebody out on a date you should know why before you do it. Many people ask somebody out, just to realize that they have no clue on why they did it. Below are a couple of things that you should keep in mind before asking somebody out on a date. The ReasonWhy are you asking the person out? Is it because you have a lot in common? If you cannot answer this question you may want to rethink your actions. Will They Say Yes?You may get rejected. Remember, just because you ask somebody out does not necessarily mean that they are going to say yes. Dealing with rejection can sometimes be the most difficult part of asking somebody out. It is also one of the main reasons that most people do not ask for a date. Rejection hurts, but it happens to everybody. Keep It EasyRemember to never pressure the other person into going out with you. You do not want to go out on a pity date with somebody. If they say no the first time, take the answer as what it is and move on. There is no reason to hinder somebody until they change their mind. Keeping those three tips in mind will make asking for your next date a breeze. Just remember to be yourself and take chances. You will never get anywhere in the dating world without taking at least a few chances every now and then. How Bad Boys Attract So Many Beautiful Women

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Nick Shane Have you ever wondered why this girl you have a crush on goes out with a selfish and abusive jerk? You would treat her so much better of course but still…she completely ignores you. Why? This mystery bugs the hell out of almost every guy out there. Most men just can’t figure out what it is that makes women fall for the wrong guys…the bad boys! So the question is: Why are so many beautiful women attracted to arrogant, abusive and selfish jerks? It took me many years until I figured this out but now I’ll let you in on this secret. If you want an answer to why and how bad boys attract so many beautiful women, you have to look through the looking-glass the other way and ask yourself… Why are those women NOT dating the nice guys who treat them like real princesses? Obviously, they are dating the arrogant jerks and bad boys … and NOT the guys who are nice to her, pay her lots of compliments, bring flowers and want to take them out on a dinner date. The first thing you have to realize now is that ‘being BAD’ gets you 10 times more women than ‘being GOOD’. Look around you and have a look at some couples where the woman is really beautiful and attractive. Her man definitely isn’t the nicey-nice type of guy. So how do these bad boys do it? What makes them so attractive and sexy to women? It’s because women want to be with guys who are a challenge and not easy to get. Bad boys and jerks don’t give a damn if a woman likes them or not, whereas the nicey-nice guy is needy, clingy and desperately wants to take her out on a date. Bad boys are wild, brake rules and do what they want. Women get automatically attracted to such behavior because it is exciting and unpredictable. Nice guys ALWAYS do the expected and predictable, therefore making themselves boring in the eyes of any woman. Bad boys are always superior when it comes to attracting and dating the most beautiful women out there. Have a look at some of the female celebrities out there. They can literally choose any guy they want…and who do they end up with? It’s either an alcoholic rock star, bad boy actor or abusive jerk with tattoos all over his body. But what attracts women to these guys isn’t their abusive attitude, their arrogant behavior and wife beating tendencies…hell no. You see, if you were a woman and you had to choose between a nice guy who has nothing else to offer than the classic dates such as going to a restaurant where he pays for everything or a movie where he brings chocolate and flowers … then the woman wants THE OTHER guy there is. And that, sadly enough, is the bad boys on the block. You hear so many people say that those kind of guys are the ‘wrong men’ but what else is there? As a woman, you always choose the man who is wild, rebellious and in love with himself over the nice-nice wimpy guy who would do anything for you. Think about what class you fall into.
